Treacy Ziegler: Crossing the Infinite Reach
April 29 – June 29 2024
Artist’s reception: Saturday June 8th 10:30 am – 1:30 pm
Excerpt from Treacy Ziegler’s artist statement:
Infinite suggests beyond the immediate world. […] Instead of seeking mutual understanding, does “reach” become a trusting acceptance for another? I suspect my portraits of animals become the metaphor for these questions.
I also use animal imagery because animals have been telling our stories for thousands of years. Crucial to our experience with animals is our ability to suspend moral judgment. Animals exist neither as good or bad. Suspending moral judgment clears space for wonderment, and in wonderment, can primary prejudicial defenses be put aside?
The [animal] sculptures are made from prisoners’ letters written to the Prisoner Express program from prisons across the United States. […] I have been the volunteer art director for the Prisoner Express program for the past 12 years. Historically, after the thousands of letters and requests for participation in the project are answered, the letters have been recycled. It is my hope that these sculptures, made from their letters reflect and respect the emotions I read in those their correspondence; the hope, the loneliness, the thankfulness, the isolation, the regret.
